International GT racer and Supercar endurance co-driver David Russell will team up with his father Geoff Russell at this year’s Hi Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour production car race to be held at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit on April 21.
This premier Australian Production Car endurance race will mark the second time that this father and son combination will compete together, the last time being at the 2003 Bathurst Two Hour Production Car Showdown. Both Russells’ possess vast experience of racing at Mount Panorama during each of their respective motor racing careers.
The Russells’ will compete in the 2019 event racing a BMW 135i, prepared by Sherrin Racing. Geoff Russell’s links to Mount Panorama include a total of ten Bathurst 1000’s, highlighted by his top six finish co-driving with Rusty French in the 1984 Bathurst 1000. Russell Senior also has a Comalco Wunderlich Sports Sedan Championship and multiple Australian Speedway Championship titles to his name.
David Russell has raced to class victories in every 6, 12 and 24 Hour Bathurst Production Car and GT endurance race that he has finished since 2001. Russell also raced as a Bathurst Supercar enduro driver with Dick Johnson Racing along with a seven season tenure with Kelly Racing / Nissan Motorsport in Supercars. He was selected by Tickford Racing as a Supercar endurance race driver in 2018, partnering Cameron Waters in the Monster Energy Tickford Racing Falcon.
According to David, the opportunity to compete alongside his father at Bathurst given both of their racing histories is a great one.
“Dad has been by my side throughout my racing career and we have always talked about racing together again one day. The opportunity to do that at the Six Hour will be great and we are really looking forward to it.
The more competitive laps a driver can do at Mount Panorama the better and this combined with the Bathurst 12 Hour ensures that I have plenty of Bathurst miles under my belt ahead of the Supercar enduros.
“We head to Bathurst competing to win our class and to achieve a strong outright result. I think we have the car and team to achieve this goal,” David Russell said.
Russell Senior is equally as eager to partner up with his son, after watching David race at the Mountain countless times across several different categories over the years.
“I couldn’t ask for a more experienced co-driver for this race and the fact that he is my son makes it so much more special. I am sure that we will be a great driving combination at the Six Hour where it is all about consistency, reliability and strategy,” Geoff Russell stated.
The Hi Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour takes place across the Easter weekend of April 19-21, 2019 at Bathurst’s legendary Mount Panorama circuit. A total of 45 Production Cars will take part in this year’s race across seven classes that include A1 –Extreme Performance, A2- Extreme Performance Normally Aspirated, B1 & 2 – High Performance Forced Induction, C & D – Performance and E - Small Car.
David Russell has just returned from making a podium debut (3rd) in the Blancpain World Challenge GT Asia Series held at Sepang International Raceway over the weekend. He is competing in the entire series with the HubAuto Corsa Ferrari Team, alongside his Australian GT and yet to be finalised Supercars enduro drive.
