Herculean effort delivers Quinn Camaro, Denyer to Bathurst grid
A HURCULEAN effort has delivered the lone Chevrolet Camaro to the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour grid this weekend.
In serious doubt to compete just a fortnight ago, Tony Quinn’s brand-new Camaro was pieced together in quick time thanks to a hefty joint-forces effort by his own Keltic Racing crew and the Melbourne Performance Centre.
Quinn will drive the Game Over-backed car for the first time in Friday practice, and will be joined once again by grandson Ryder and Bathurst-based Grant Denyer.
Quinn and Denyer won the A2 class in 2022 driving a Ford Mustang, before Ryder joined the pair to claim another win the following year in a thrilling finish, the latter stealing the win in the final corner.
They returned last year however a heavy crash at Sulman Park saw the existing Mustang written off.
Early delays pushed the build of the Camaro back with members of Quinn’s team flying to Melbourne last week to help put the car together in what the team described as an ‘incredibly smooth’ build.
The Camaro will be the lone Chevrolet representative in the Extreme Performance, Normally Aspirated A2 category which is dominated by Ford Mustangs.
The Chris Lillis / Nathan Callaghan / Josh Muggleton Camaro that starred last year was due to race this year, however recently withdrew after Lillis required surgery to an injured ankle.
Defending class winners Jason Gomersall and Aaron Seton have added Todd Hazelwood to their squad in a bid to claim a repeat win, while Supercars racer Bryce Fullwood and two-time Bathurst champion John Bowe are among the highly competitive class roster.
Practice gets underway tomorrow at Mount Panorama.
