Mustang ends a Good Friday quickest overall

A CAMERON McLEOD flyer has seen Ford Mustang top the times on Friday at the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.

A flying 2m21.8624s lap in practice three, late on a stunning and sunny Good Friday, saw the #6 Mustang he shares with Keith Kassulke set not only the quickest time of the session, but the quickest of the day.

The third session was interrupted by a lengthy red flag after Queenslander Josh Smith crashed at the Elbow.

His Class C Champ Group HSV Astra – shared this weekend by Smith, Tristan Ellery and Steve McHugh – ran wide on the entrance to the left hander and ran along the tyre bundles, before tripping up and rolling gently on the tyre bundles, landing on its roof.

Smith was checked by circuit medical and released immediately following the incident, with the team assessing the damage.

The session resumed following the red flag with McLeod setting his quickest lap soon thereafter.

Will Davison pushed his BMW to the top of Class X late in the day, falling just 0.1s short of McLeod’s benchmark before pitting on another flyer.

It sets a competitive tone between the V8 powered, normally aspirated Class A2 cars and the turbocharged BMWs that make up a majority of Class X – and have dominated proceedings in all nine previous races.

Jayden Ojeda put the BMW he shares with Simon Hodges third while Josh Muggleton and Zach Bates posted almost identical times in the Cachet Homes Camaro to be fourth, and second in A2.

Tim Brook jumped to fifth late in the #51 Mustang – shared with Ryan McMillan and Tyler Cheney – with the Jason Gomersall / Ben Gomersall and Aaron Seton car next.

Tom Shaw was in the top-10 again, while Ryder Quinn’s best lap put the Game Over Camaro into the top-10.

Dean Cambell and Cameron Crick were next with the Hadrian Morrall / Tyler Mecklem Mustang next.

Six of the top-10 cars were from Class A2 while Class X cars filled the remainder of the top-12 positions at the end of practice.

The leading A1 car was the BMW M2 of Cameron Lewis, Cody Gillis and Leon Cordato in 15th outright, while Lachy Mineeff topped the B2 runners in 14th position in the Randall Racing BMW.

Class C was again topped by the Keene / Keene Volkswagen (37th position) while the Class D leader was the #80 Mazda RX-8 of David Murphy, Stiaan Kriel and Steven King.

For the third time in three sessions, Class E was topped by the Honda Accord Euro of Greg Boyle and Brett Stevens.
